An exceptional fabric, shearling is used in the greatest fashion houses for quality pieces, coats of absolute beauty made to be kept for many years. Shearling coats are worn by both women and men, in long models or in a more structured silhouette over short, trendy pieces. But the coat will also sleep in the wardrobe for a good part of the year, so how can you preserve all its beauty and how can you take care of it in the long term? To help you see things more clearly, Maison RÈGNE explains how to clean a shearling coat.
Shearling coat care techniques
Maintaining and caring for a sheepskin coat or jacket requires a few daily precautions and a certain level of product knowledge. It is a demanding material and should not be treated with products intended for smooth leather.
First of all, never store your rain-soaked coat in its cover. Let it air dry and waterproof it with a special spray. Spray lightly from 20 cm away from your coat, without overspraying for too long, before letting it dry in a ventilated area. This treatment will protect your fur from water and future light stains. Only then can you put it in its cover until its next use.
For a small stain, you can brush the desired area with a special suede brush. Gently brushing only the area to be treated will allow for quick cleaning without damaging the softness of the coat. This also works to remove dust.
For a more targeted cleaning, you can use a gentle suede shampoo to gently remove stains. This will also help revive the original color of your leather, which can fade without proper care. Apply the shampoo to the dusted surface using a soft sponge, lathering and paying particular attention to the dirtiest areas. Then, rinse (always with your soft sponge and without adding unnecessary water) until the shampoo is completely removed and let it dry for several hours away from sunlight in a space without excessive heat.
To clean and restore a little softness to the inside of your coat, you can also sprinkle a little baby powder on it. Leave it on for a few hours and brush gently: the inside of your sheepskin coat will regain its softness and shine.
For a thorough cleaning of your sheepskin coat, we recommend having it professionally degreased every year or two, depending on how often it is worn.
